Hugger Ceiling Fan - The
Best Choice For Smaller Spaces
When room height is an issue, the
hugger ceiling fan is the option.
What is a hugger ceiling
fan?
It's a style of fan that allows the
motor to mount directly to the ceiling. As its name
suggests, a hugger ceiling fan is generally used in rooms
that have low ceilings. They are actually manufactured
and marketed as hugger fans.
The traditional ceiling fans (multi-mount) will sometimes
advertise themselves as hugger fans, but the two should not be
confused. They do this because the traditional,
multi-mount fans can be hung without the down rod which gives
the same effect as a hugger fan, but again, they are not hugger
ceiling fans.
Hugger fans are specially designed to
allow installations on 7'6" - 8' ceiling heights when a fan
light kit is used in the location where walking under the fan
could be a safety issue.
A Hugger ceiling fan is mounted
directly against the ceiling using flush mounts. Although
most standard fans can be installed as a flush mount, they are
not manufactured as such. Only fans specifically designed
and manufactured to have the motor mounted directly to the
ceiling can be sold specifically as "hugger" or "low profile"
ceiling fans.
The hugger fans are great for rooms
with ceiling that are under 8 feet in height or situations in
which a fan with the optional light would hang too far down and
endanger individuals who are walking
underneath.
Hugger fans do not receive the energy
savings approval because they do not move as much air since the
blades are close to the ceiling unlike traditional
fans.
When shopping for a low profile fan or
hugger fan, there are issues that need to be considered before
making the purchase:
1. How easy is it to
assemble?
Read the directions carefully and ask questions, some fans can
be assembled and installed in an hour or two without any
problems. Verify with the salesperson that the model you
are interested in can also be installed quickly and easily.
2. Don't forget to ask about the remote? Can you
change speeds, and change direction of the blades, or does it
have gradient dimming that you can access using the
remote?
3. How many speeds does the fan
have?
4. If there is a fan mounted in
the showroom, look it over carefully. Is the fan
quiet? Does it look sturdy and is there any wobble to the
unit? Ask about the break-in time which is usually about 24
hours.
After your fan is installed, if you
hear any noises give it the allotted time to break-in before
asking for a refund. There is always an exception and
that would be if the noise was bad enough that you determined
it may be a hazard to you or your family.
5. Check out the fan light
kit. If you are interested only in fans that use the
standard size bulb, you may be disappointed since most light
kits come with the candelabra size. You need to make sure
the fan model you choose uses the type bulb you want to
use.
A little research on your part as far
as your needs will increase the satisfaction with the hugger
ceiling fan you purchase.
